Tie and dye is a term used to describe a dying technique. The ancient Indian Tie and dye or "Bandhani" technique begin around 5000 years ago in the Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. it is the oldest method still in use to make turbans odhni, lehenga and sarees. Bandhani comes from the word "Bandhan" which means tying up. It is a technique that is used to make different patterns on cloth by different tying methods and dyeing.
To Tie and dye, first fold or crumble fabric and tie it with string or rubber bands then dip the fabric in bucket of dye or apply the dye with squirt bottles then the cloth is left alone for 3 to 4 hours as a colour soak into the desired areas along the fabric Beneath it the threaded knots to remain undyed. Once completed, the fabric is washed and starched as required.
India's rich cultural heritage and traditional diversity are reflected by a wide variety of Handicrafts and arts and these arts should be pass on from generation to generation as a form of art. For this, PRAGRATH started an initiative called "Gyatavya Bharat". Under this initiative, PRAGRATH is organising workshops to teach students and make them familiar with rich heritage of India in which this beautiful ancient art of tying and dyeing is one of them. PRAGRATH has organized tie and dye workshops in various schools of Ghaziabad and Bijnor districts of UP.
