Pichwai Art Compettition

Mar 13, 2026

Pichwai Art is a traditional Indian style of painting that originated over 400 years ago in Nathdwara, a town in Rajasthan. The word pichwai means "hanging at the back" and is derives from the Sanskrit word 'Pich' which means back and 'wai' means hanging. This intricate art form is primarily used to depict the life and stories of Lord Krishna, particularly his childhood in Vrindavan and his incarnation as Srinathji, a form of Krishna. These paintings are known for their rich details, vibrant colours, and intricate compositions. Artists use natural pigment to create these works, often depicting lush forest, lotus blooms, cows, and peacocks, which are associated with Krishna's life.

Pichwai art is characterized by large-scale, almost mural-sized canvases that are often hung in temples as a backdrop during festivals or religious rituals.

Engaging in pichwai art offers various benefits, ranging from personal development to mental well-being. As pichwai art is an endangered art form, understanding and promoting it helps students play a role in cultural preservation. By showing interest, students contribute to keeping this art form alive. Keeping this in mind, ‘PRAGRATH ' organizes Pichwai Art workshops and Pichwai Art competitions under its "Gyatvya Bharat" Initiative.
